Joaquin Phoenix lost 52 pounds to play the Joker in his upcoming movie

To portray the Joker in a new film about the recognisable villain, Joaquin Phoenix shed 52 pounds.

The information was disclosed by "Joker" director Todd Phillips in a recent interview with Josh Rottenberg for the Los Angeles Times. The character's genesis story will be much more grounded and realistic than prior comic book adaptations, according to both Phillips and Phoenix.

Phoenix, one of many performers to play the Joker, told the LA Times that all she could do was approach the character in the way she does. "I simply tried to act in a way that felt genuine and original to us. Knock yourself out, whatever you guys want to discuss it."

As paparazzi images from before the 2018 New York City filming of the movie appeared online, moviegoers got their first look at Phoenix's slimmer figure. The "Joker" movie's first trailer, which was published in April 2019, displayed the full scope of the metamorphosis.

In the teaser, Arthur Fleck from Phoenix was depicted as a struggling comedian in 1980s Gotham City. Phoenix was also shown in one shot holding a clown shoe while stooped over on a seat without a shirt on, with a noticeable bruising on his right shoulder and his spine sticking out. Phoenix was shown in another clip standing in a living room with his ribs on display.
